On 19 February, Lisbon will host an important bilateral workshop between Portugal and Norway, dedicated to safeguarding coastal archaeological heritage. The event will take place in the Auditorium of the National Centre for Nautical and Underwater Archaeology (CNANS) and is promoted by the EEA Grants Fund for Bilateral Relations.
With a programme running from 9am to 6pm, the workshop aims to raise awareness of the fragility of coastal archaeological heritage, a unique, finite environmental resource that is highly vulnerable to climate change and human action. The meeting represents a unique opportunity to debate concrete measures to guarantee the sustainability of this heritage, through territorial management instruments and environmental impact assessments.
The event features experts from both countries, promoting the sharing of case studies and deepening co-operation between Património Cultural, IP (Portugal) and Riksantikvaren - Directorate for Cultural Heritage (Norway).
To close the initiative, on 20 February, participants will go on a field trip to Lourinhã, Peniche, Mafra/Ericeira and Sintra, where examples of heritage at risk will be analysed.
