EEA Grants Portugal Environment Programme promotes climate resilience in Baixo Alentejo and Vale do Guadiana Natural Park

The EEA Grants Portugal Environment Programme held an event today focused on climate adaptation, with visits to the "+SOLO+VIDA" projects in Mértola and "Viver o Clima no Baixo Alentejo" in Beja.

As part of the event "Climate Adaptation in Action - INCREASED CLIMATE CHANGE RESILIENCE AND RESPONSIVENESS IN TARGETED AREAS," the day highlighted innovative actions to increase resilience and response capacity to climate change in the target areas.

"+SOLO+VIDA" Project in Vale do Guadiana Natural Park

The "+SOLO+VIDA" project is an innovative pilot initiative aimed at climate change adaptation and mitigation, and combating desertification in Vale do Guadiana Natural Park (PNVG). This initiative includes the design, implementation, and evaluation of a territorial programme for climate change adaptation and mitigation, focusing on reducing vulnerability to desertification. With a participatory approach, the project empowers local actors, especially farmers, to adopt sustainable silvo-agricultural practices through a local governance model that ensures long-term sustainability.

The project significantly contributes to reducing social and economic disparities in Europe by increasing the resilience and response capacity of PNVG actors to climate change. The aim is to develop a replicable model for other regions by applying 10 best practices over 94 hectares in PNVG. The actions focus on habitats 92d0 (Southern riparian galleries and thickets), 4030 (European dry heaths), and 6220* (Pseudo-steppe with grasses and annuals of the Thero-Brachypodietea), with the possibility of also contributing to habitat 92a0 (Salix alba and Populus alba galleries).

"Viver o Clima no Baixo Alentejo" Project

In Baixo Alentejo, the "Viver o Clima no Baixo Alentejo" project aims to tackle the main effects of climate change in the region. The Baixo Alentejo Intermunicipal Climate Change Adaptation Plan (PIAACBA) identifies strategic measures to combat and mitigate these changes. In partnership with the Alqueva Development and Infrastructure Company (EDIA), the Baixo Alentejo Intermunicipal Community (CIMBAL) aims to implement concrete and demonstrative actions in the municipalities covered by the Alqueva Multi-Purpose Project (EFMA).

Impact and Expectations

This event highlights the commitment of the EEA Grants Portugal Environment Programme to sustainability and climate adaptation. The initiatives presented not only increase the resilience of the target areas but also serve as models for other regions facing similar climate challenges. With the active participation of local communities and the application of sustainable best practices, these projects are expected to contribute to a more resilient and environmentally sustainable future.

Today's event reinforces the importance of collaborative and innovative actions to address climate change and promotes the sharing of knowledge and experiences between different regions and actors.
