Exhibition "More Pollinators, More Biodiversity" Highlights the Importance of Environmental Conservation in Oeiras

Exhibition

Initiative promoted under the EEA Grants Environment Program raises awareness about pollinator protection and biodiversity preservation in the municipality.

The "More Pollinators, More Biodiversity" exhibition, inaugurated on February 12, 2024, at 12:00 PM, at the Oeiras Seafront Promenade (Santo Amaro section), marked a significant moment in promoting biodiversity and pollinator conservation in the municipality.

This event is part of the project "More Pollinators, More Biodiversity in the Municipality of Oeiras", developed within the framework of the Environment, Climate Change, and Low Carbon Economy Program, funded by the European Economic Area (EEA) Grants 2014 – 2021.

The ceremony was attended by various participants, including students, project promoters and partners, as well as two representatives from the Secretariat-General for the Environment (Operator of the Environment Program), Valter Borges and Tiago Cardoso. The event also welcomed the Mayor of Oeiras, Dr. Isaltino Morais, reinforcing the municipality's commitment to environmental conservation and sustainability.

The exhibition was led by biologist Sara Almeida, who presented the project's key actions, with a special focus on the work carried out at the Quinta do Recreio do Marquês de Pombal. This site has served as a "living laboratory", allowing for the testing and implementation of innovative measures to conserve biodiversity and local ecosystems.

Throughout the exhibition, images and illustrative materials showcased the impact of the project’s actions, including:

Conservation of the municipality’s natural habitats;

Surveying and monitoring of native and invasive flora, as well as lichens;

Promotion of suitable habitats for pollinators, encouraging their proliferation;

Awareness-raising actions aimed at the local community, highlighting the benefits of biodiversity preservation.

The initiative reinforces the importance of pollinator protection and their fundamental role in maintaining urban ecosystems. Through this project, the goal is not only to preserve species essential to environmental balance but also to engage the community in adopting best practices for nature conservation.

This event underscores the commitment of the EEA Grants and the Municipality of Oeiras to promoting effective climate adaptation strategies, ensuring a more sustainable and balanced future for generations to come.
