The Living Labs for Decarbonisation and Climate Change Mitigation are transforming Portuguese cities into models of sustainable innovation. These spaces allow companies, municipalities, universities, and NGOs to collaborate on the development and testing of technologies that promote energy efficiency, sustainable mobility, and the circular economy.
With projects in cities such as Lisbon, Cascais, Sintra, and Porto, these initiatives are already delivering concrete results. The "Cascais Smart Pole" integrates energy efficiency technologies and waste management through gamification, while the "Afurada Living Lab" promotes an ecosystem of electric mobility and waste reuse.
With the support of the EEA Grants, the Living Labs have a direct impact on urban sustainability: reducing annual CO2 emissions, benefiting over 477,000 people, and creating new jobs.
Beyond environmental benefits, these initiatives actively engage citizens, encouraging them to adopt more sustainable habits and contribute to building innovative, inclusive, and resilient cities. The Environment Programme thus reinforces its commitment to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals.
